OTTAWA -- Award-winning filmmaker Denys Arcand and native son Paul Anka were among those who received Canada's highest honours from Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson on Friday.
Arcand, whose film The Barbarian Invasions won an Oscar for best foreign language film last year, was presented with the country's highest honour, companion.
The director of Jesus of Montreal has also won 12 Genies and the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
Anka, an Ottawa native who has sold more than 60 million records, was made an officer of the order. He was honoured for his commitment to Canadian performers and composers.
"I was very happy to be home,'' Anka said later outside Rideau Hall. The event was "a special morning for me and all of my fellow recipients.''
The week was also something of a homecoming for the singer of such hits as Lonely Boy, Puppy Love and Diana. He received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto on the weekend.
Clarkson presented 43 awards which recognized people who have made a difference to life in Canada.
